What Is Air Dough?

Air Dough activity kit

Air dough is a particular kind of air dry clay made by Scentco. This type of modeling clay dries and hardens when exposed to air for extended periods of time.

Since it doesn’t require the use of a kiln or oven to harden, it’s a great choice for arts and crafts projects.

Air dough is lightweight, pliable, and easy to work with, making it suitable for various applications such as:

  • Sculpting
  • Jewelry making
  • Home decor projects
  • Building figurines

To use it, you simply mold and shape it, and then leave it to dry at room temperature.

The drying time can vary from a few hours to several days, depending on the thickness of the piece and the humidity in the environment.

Once it’s completely dry, you can even paint or decorate it more.

Just keep in mind that air dough is not waterproof or highly durable, so it’s best used for decorative purposes or light-duty projects.

Does Air Dough Dry?

Air Dough dries and hardens if it’s set out and exposed to air overnight.

Unlike other types of modeling clay, air dry clay doesn’t require heat from a kiln or oven to harden.

Instead, as it’s exposed to air for an extended period of time, the water trapped inside evaporates. This is how the it dries out and hardens.

How Long Does It Take Air Dough To Dry?

Air Dough Bucket

Air Dough typically dries and hardens overnight.

However, the amount of time it takes to dry depends on a few factors, including the:

  • Thickness
  • Temperature and humidity
  • Airflow
  • Ventilation

To help you’re it dry faster, you can:

  • Use a thinner amount in your project
  • Put it in a warm and dry room
  • Keep it near a window to increase airflow
  • Set it on a baking rack to increase the amount of air it’s exposed to

Be sure not to bake it or dry it with a hair dryer. This can cause it to harden too quickly and dry unevenly, leading to cracks in your design.

What Is Air Dough Clay Made From?

Scentco doesn’t say exactly what Air Dough is made of.

However, air dry clay typically consists of a combination of materials, such as clay, paper, or plastic fibers, along with water and binders like cornstarch or glue.

The composition may vary, but the main idea remains the same: it hardens through evaporation of water when exposed to air.

It’s also worth noting that Scentco’s Air Dough is:

  • Gluten free (but not meant for ingestion!)
  • Non-toxic
  • Mess free (doesn’t stick to fabric)
  • Unscented

How Do You Revive Air Dough?

If your Air Dough becomes dry, stiff, or difficult to work with, you can try reviving it by following these steps:

  1. Moisten your hands: Wet your hands with a little water or apply a small amount of water to your fingertips.
  2. Knead the dough: Begin kneading the air dough, gradually adding water into it. Be careful not to add too much water at once, as this can make the it too wet and sticky. Instead, add small amounts of water as you knead, allowing the dough to absorb moisture evenly.
  3. Assess the consistency: As you knead the dough, check its consistency. If it’s still too dry or crumbly, add a bit more water and continue kneading. The air dough should be soft and pliable but not sticky.
  4. Wrap and let rest: If the dough is still not as pliable as you’d like, wrap it in a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest for about 30 minutes. This will give the moisture time to be absorbed more evenly throughout the dough.
  5. Knead again: After letting the dough rest, knead it again to ensure the moisture is well distributed. If necessary, you can try adding a little more water.

Keep in mind that if the air dough has already hardened completely, it may be difficult or impossible to revive.

In such cases, it’s usually best to open a new pack for your project.

How To Start An Air Dough Fundraiser

An Air Dough fundraiser is a fundraising idea that involves selling Air Dough to raise funds for your cause.

Since kids and students love this product, they’re great for school fundraisers.

To make money, you buy the Air Dough in bulk from Scentco so you can get them for a lower price.

Then, depending on which type you order, you can sell the packs for only about $2 to $3 to supporters.

Your potential profit for each case is anywhere from about $115 to $160.

However, you do have the option to set higher or lower prices depending on what you think is best.

Finally, don’t forget you have the option to sell other items for your fundraiser. For example, you could also offer other fun products like:

If you’re really crafty, you might even be able to create and sell Air Dough necklaces or charms to make more money!
